Neutrality is not the goal of this massive pharma company out of Switzerland.

Swiss multinational prescription drug giant Novartis International is one of the biggest pharma companies in the world by both sales and by market capitalization. The company makes a huge variety of drugs that are popular all over the world. It also makes billions of dollars each year in revenue.

It’s a member of the International Federation of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers, the European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industries and Associations, and also the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America. So, even though the company is based out of Switzerland, it has a major international presence in the drug industry.

Major Medications

This company makes major medicines that are used all over the world. These include the following prominent prescription drugs:

  • Clozapine (clozaril)
  • Voltaren (diclofenac)
  • Tegretol (carbamazepine)
  • Diovan (valsartan)
  • Gleevec (imatinib mesylate)
  • Neoral (ciclosporin)
  • Lamisil (terbinafine)
  • Ritalin (methylphenidate)

Some of these medications came into Novardis through its mergers and acquisitions. Companies like Ciba-Geigy and Sandoz have been a part of the Novardis family of brands.

Merged Beginning

This company began in 1996 with the merger of two other drug companies from Switzerland, Sandoz Laboratories and Ciba-Geigy. Ciba-Geigy has its roots in another merger, one between Ciba and J.R. Geigy. Ciba was founded in 1859 in Basel and J.R. Geigy was founded in 1758 in Basel as well. Sandoz was also founded out of Basel, only in 1886. Basel, Switzerland clearly has long been a center of pharmaceutical development in Europe.

When the companies merged, they agreed to go by the name Novartis. At that time, the newly merged company spun off a myriad of other businesses.

Together, the shared companies invest heavily in research and development. The company is now heavily involved in research that is publicly funded. This includes vaccines that are developed in conjunction with the European Commission as well as other public global health initiatives. Novartis has positioned itself as a leader in public health and global research. This goes beyond vaccines and pharmaceuticals to include some heavy development of telemedicine.

Giant Brand

The company has grown into a major world brand. It makes a huge variety of medical products. These include over-the-counter drugs, generic medications, diagnostics, animal health, vaccines, pharmaceuticals, contact lenses, and more.

This giant brand has also found itself on the tough side of some giant problems. Novartis has struggled with sexual discrimination lawsuits, off label prescribing scandals, and marketing violations in the last twenty years. For the marketing violations, Novartis agreed to pay more than four hundred million dollars in both civil and criminal claims. The company admitted to illegally paying healthcare professionals  in ways that would boost its sales.

Novartis has a vast presence across prescription medications, including in the fields of animal science. A major portion of the Novartis sales model includes animal health, particularly in the realm of livestock health. The company has developed a huge range of products for agriculture that includes everything from vaccines for pets to rodent and insect control.

With so many different aspects to its business, Novartis has mastered the art of diversification. The company is headed into the future with bright prospects.
